Towana Looney, a 53-year-old woman, has become the fifth person (Fifth Pig Kidney Transplant) in the world to receive a pig kidney since the revolutionary procedure began in 2022 in the United States.
Looney’s medical journey began in the 1990s when she donated one of her kidneys to save her parent’s life. Unfortunately, the remaining kidney soon succumbed to severe complications. Since 2016, Looney had been undergoing treatments to manage her deteriorating health, eventually reaching a point where a new kidney became a matter of life and death.
A Groundbreaking Surgery on November 25, 2024
On November 25, 2024, Looney underwent a seven-hour surgery to receive a pig kidney. Following the successful operation, she was discharged from the hospital on December 6, 2024.
In an interview with the media, Looney expressed her gratitude and optimism, saying, “This is my second chance at life. I feel stronger, my appetite has returned, and for the first time in eight years, I can use the restroom normally.”
Medical Experts Share Hopeful Insights
Dr. Robert Montgomery, who led the surgical team, shared promising updates, noting Looney’s remarkable progress. “She is showing encouraging signs of adapting to the pig kidney,” he stated.
This contrasts with the outcomes of earlier recipients. The first person to receive a pig kidney, Ricky Slayman, passed away after just two months. The second recipient experienced complications that led to the removal of the kidney after 47 days, followed by their demise.
However, medical professionals are optimistic about Looney’s long-term survival with the transplanted kidney.
The Growing Demand for Organ Transplants
In the United States alone, over 100,000 people are currently waiting for organ transplants, with 90,000 of them requiring new kidneys. This pioneering procedure could revolutionize organ transplantation, offering hope to thousands of patients worldwide.
