On Thursday, November 14, 2024, Hope in Jesus Church donated 4 tons of porridge flour to help combat child stunting and malnutrition among underprivileged mothers. The initiative took place in Rukiri I Cell, Remera Sector, Gasabo District, where several needy mothers received the donation.
A Legacy of Giving Back
Bishop Innocent Gakamuye, the leader of Hope in Jesus Church, highlighted that this donation is part of the church’s ongoing efforts to support the community. Last month, the church provided health insurance for 600 underprivileged individuals in the same sector. Bishop Gakamuye emphasized that these initiatives aim to align with their mission: “A sound mind in a sound body.”

Speaking to the gathered mothers, Bishop Gakamuye encouraged them to deepen their relationship with God. He added:
“Health insurance ensures you can access medical care, but today’s initiative addresses nutrition. We are combating child stunting and supporting the well-being of mothers by providing Shisha Kibondo and Shisha Mubyeyi porridge flour.”
The church distributed 4 tons of the flour to the mothers present, ensuring everyone received their fair share.
Practical Advice on Usage
Bishop Gakamuye offered practical instructions on how to prepare the porridge. He advised boiling water, adding the flour, stirring for 40 seconds, and sweetening it lightly before serving it to children.
Mama Bishop Judith Gakamuye demonstrated the preparation process to ensure mothers used the flour effectively. She also warned them against selling the flour for alcohol or other purposes. Madame Jacky Mutabonwa, a church member, reinforced this by preparing the porridge on-site and serving it to children as an example.
Community Collaboration
The ceremony was attended by Vedaste Ntagwera, an education inspector representing the Remera Sector executive. He urged parents to prioritize their children’s education, stating:
“No child should fail to attend school because public education is free. Partners like churches can also assist underprivileged families.”
Ntagwera cited the Bible, referencing James’ teaching that faith without action is dead. He commended Hope in Jesus Church for combining spiritual teaching with impactful community support initiatives.
He also reminded parents about the importance of maintaining cleanliness and resolving family conflicts, as these issues can harm children’s growth and well-being.
Voices of Gratitude
Madame Dancilla Nyirabizimana, one of the beneficiaries, expressed deep gratitude. She shared her story of overcoming immense challenges, including the loss of her husband, four sons, and her mother, as well as being robbed of her business savings. She revealed how the church intervened during her darkest moments, raising RWF 1 million to support her recovery.
“This porridge flour donation is just one of the many ways this church has supported me. I thank God for using Hope in Jesus Church to uplift my life and that of my children.”
Looking Ahead
Bishop Gakamuye announced plans for future activities, including medical checkups for community members and workshops on overcoming poverty through entrepreneurship. These ongoing efforts reaffirm the church’s commitment to holistic community development.
